Fav Lyric: "To everyone out there who's a little different, I say damn a magazine these are God's fingerprints." - Brother Ali, "Forest Whitiker"
To everyone who hasn't heard the song Forest Whitiker, you should check it out, it'll just make you feel good. Also you should check out his promotional video and song for his upcoming album "Us." You can download the song for free: http://www.rhymesayers.com/news.php#newsId_1808
Wack Lyric: "I dumb down for my audience, and doubled my dollas. They criticize me for it yet they all yell holla. If skills sold, truth be told, i'd probably be lyrically Talib Kweli. Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense, but I did five mil, I aint been rhymin like Common since." -Jay Z "Moment Of Clarity"
Now these aren't bad lyrics. It's the message that just disgusts me. Basically he's saying "I SOLD OUT but everybody still loves me." He's trying to tell us that he's good enough to rhyme like Kweli or Common but he makes more money dumbing his lyrics down so he does that. I highly doubt that he really is this skilled and has dumbed down lyrics only because he wants to, and even if it is true, why dont hip hop fans everywhere protest this shit and demand a higher quality? Instead, he is regarded as a legend and to some the best rapper alive. How can he be the best rapper alive when he admits to "dumbing down" and admits he is no Common or Talib Kweli? The line "If skills sold I'd be Talib Kweli" says point blank that I AM NOT AS GOOD AS TALIB KWELI yet he has another song on the same album that claims him to be the best rapper alive. Not even close.
